As Dame Sarah Mullally becomes the first ordained woman to be selected as the next Archbishop of Canterbury, Faith2Share marks this historic moment as recognition of the breaking of a stained-glass ceiling — offering hope and inspiration to Christian women around the world beyond the Anglican Communion.
While acknowledging that this decision is not without sensitivities in some global Christian contexts, where the appointment of women to senior leadership roles can remain culturally sensitive, we are also witnessing significant change. Christian organisations are increasingly experiencing the transformative impact of women leaders who are building unity among Christian communities, navigating complex challenges, engaging constructively with governments, strengthening community development programmes, and intentionally empowering other women.
In many communities, women make up the majority of church members and are central to the life and mission of Christian organisations, yet a visible gap remains between participation and leadership. Faith2Share, as a membership organisation of Christian agencies and networks, sees daily evidence of women breaking through into leadership roles. Many gifted women are stepping forward into senior positions, demonstrating their capability as trusted leaders and earning recognition from their peers for their wisdom and resilience.
In a recent news item, Faith2Share celebrated a female leadership transition within one of our member organisations, CMS Ireland. Today, we congratulate Dame Sarah Mullally, while honouring the many women across our membership and beyond who are answering God’s call to lead. We give thanks and pray that their leadership will continue to strengthen the Church’s witness, deepen its unity, and reflect the gifts that God has entrusted to women and men alike.
