THE

VISION

It's over 160 years since Captain Allen Gardiner, R.N., founded what is now the South American Mission Society.  His vision was to reach the indigenous peoples of the southern part of that continent with the gospel.  His death and that of his pioneer companions from starvation in Tierra del Fuego served only to give momentum to the mission and God graciously answered prayers recorded in the journal found by his body - notably for others to take up the challenge and ultimately for the ministry to reach mainstream Latin Americans.

Today CMS continues the ministry started by SAMS-GB by partnering churches in South America and Iberia in their response to spiritual, emotional and physical needs.  At heart it seeks to lead people into a whole relationship with God.  It also promotes partnership between those churches and UK ones, helping all to do 'Global mission with a Latin heart'.

THE MISSION

CMS (continuing the ministry of SAMS GB) works in the countries of Latin America's Southern Cone - Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay - as well as in northeast Brazil, Spain and Portugal.

Its partnership with dioceses in those countries embraces a variety of ministries, including theological education, leadership training, pastoral work, education, teacher training, youth work, Bible translation and care of the marginalised (abandoned children, the disabled, health needs, indigenous literacy and land issues).

CMS's mission statement commits us to:

- be Christ centred, Biblically based, evangelistically motivated and Spirit enabled in all we do

- cooperate with our partner churches overseas, and the church in the UK, to fulfil their calling in global mission

- respond to people's spiritual, emotional and physical needs

We welcome anyone who wants to join us in service, as salaried workers overseas or as volunteers, in long and short term mission.
